The four things the consulate checks
A visa officer reviews your policy against these four points. If any one of them is missing the policy is rejected and your file is returned.
- Geographic scope — the policy must state that the whole Schengen area is covered
- Cover amount — at least €30,000
- Date range — must span the full visa period you are requesting
- Included cover — medical evacuation and repatriation must be part of it
Setting the policy dates
The policy should run from your planned first entry to your final exit. Many consulates prefer cover extending a few days beyond your return date, which keeps you on the safe side if a flight is delayed.

The common mistake: a single-country policy
A policy covering only your destination country is not accepted. The visa is issued for the whole Schengen area, so the policy has to cover it too.
