What Travel Health Insurance Covers

Short answer

Travel health insurance covers emergency medical costs arising from sudden illness or accident abroad, along with medical evacuation and repatriation; baggage and trip cancellation cover can be added depending on the policy. Planned treatment, pre-existing conditions and high-risk sports are generally excluded.

Standard cover

  • Emergency medical treatment after sudden illness or accident
  • Hospital admission and surgery
  • Medical evacuation to a suitable facility where required
  • Repatriation, including repatriation of remains
  • Emergency dental treatment, usually up to a limited amount

Optional add-ons

  • Baggage loss, theft or delay
  • Trip cancellation or early return
  • Flight delay
  • Document problems such as a lost passport

Typical exclusions

Costs arising from conditions that existed and were known before the policy started are excluded under most policies. If you are travelling specifically for treatment, a travel policy will not cover it — that is a different product.

Skiing, diving and motorsport are usually excluded from standard policies and need an add-on. If you have that kind of trip planned, say so in advance — it is the single most common gap on a ski holiday.

Frequently asked questions

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Generally not under standard travel policies. Some insurers offer limited cover as an add-on; tell us your situation and we will check which insurers accept it and on what terms.

I am going skiing — am I covered?

Standard policies usually exclude high-risk sports. Tell us if you plan to ski, snowboard or dive and we will issue a policy with the relevant add-on.
