Travel Health Insurance Cost
The price of travel health insurance depends on the length of the trip, the traveller's age, the destination and the cover amount. Trip length and age are the strongest factors; for short trips the premium is typically a small fraction of the airfare.
What sets the price
- Trip length — priced per day; the total rises with days, the daily rate usually falls
- Age — premiums rise sharply in older age groups and some insurers apply an upper age limit
- Destination — Schengen and high-cost healthcare markets such as the US and Canada are priced differently
- Cover amount — €30,000 satisfies Schengen; higher cover raises the premium
Per-trip or annual?
If you travel once a year, a per-day policy is cheaper. From roughly three or four trips a year an annual policy is usually more economical and saves issuing a new policy each time.
Annual policies cap the days per trip. If you are planning one long trip, an annual policy may not fit.
